At the end of May, SpiderGirl had a little educational funding to be spent. Since I was looking into them, I thought it would be worth it to pick up the elementary set of Life of Fred. I figured she could quickly finish Butterflies and most of Cats, and then we would settle in to go through Dogs a little more slowly. Apples wouldn't be a complete waste either -- BatBoy could start there.
SpiderGirl responded to Life of Fred as I expected she would. She really enjoys the story, though she still refuses to do some of the "Your Turn to Plays" because she finds them repetitive. (Just think how much she'd like a typical textbook!) She has finally gotten the hang of reading an analog clock. I think Life of Fred provided the motivation. The final piece that made it really click was noticing that the longer minute hand pointed to the minute dash-marks, which are (on most clocks) located on the outside ring, while the shorter hour hand pointed to the numbers located on the inside ring.
Where we have really gotten a lot out of Life of Fred are the points where we can jump into a deep topic. We have played with patterns, levels of infinity, and subtracting larger numbers from smaller ones. I wasn't sure the books would be worth the cost at first, but I think they have turned out to be a good purchase. I am looking forward to Dogs.
As for BatBoy, he disliked Apples from the get-go. We'll be selling that one in mint condition.
