Introduction to Percents

SpiderGirl has been interested in money ever since she was a toddler.  As she entered her preschool years, we gave her the opportunity to work with her own money through a weekly allowance.  Of course, at first, we took care of the tax.

Before long -- I believe it was right around the peak of the "Why?" stage -- SpiderGirl understood that the government took a little extra every time she bought something.  As she continued to gain experience, she found that the more she paid, the more tax there was.  She had trouble figuring out just how much.  There were too many numbers to juggle.

As her ability to add in her head is growing, so is SpiderGirl's ease in calculating taxes.  At least for whole dollar amounts (less than or equal to $5) or $x.99, she has shown in the past two weeks that she can consistently figure out HST mentally and with confidence.
